James Jack Mar 13, 1824 - May 20, 1904
His son, Alonzo G., a "brave and daring soldier," was killed at Bayou Borbeaux,
Louisiana, when Confederate cavalry overran the camp of the 23rd Wisconsin while
the men were eating lunch on November 3, 1863.
Letters between James and Alonzo are in the Wisconsin Historical Society archives;
one, dated January 25, 1863, contains two sketches of a church-like building and the
phrase "I have got a job of building synagogue for the Jews $2,100."
The building,
Gates of Heaven Synagogue, still stands in James Madison Park
