The small obelisk is in memory of four infant children of James and Emelie Proudfit
James Proudfit settled in Madison in 1855
Editor of the Argus and Democrat newspaper
In 1858 he was city treasurer
He enlisted in Company K, 1st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, on April 17, 1861
From 1866 to 1867 he was in the state senate
