At the start of the Civil War Oakley was in the Mendota Guards; he mustered into
Company B, 11th Wisconsin Volunteers, as first lieutenant. Shortly thereafter he was promoted to captain.
He was discharged in January 1863 for disability after being wounded in action, and died later that month.
