"In grateful remembrance of the esteem and confidence accorded to the late John Catlin, for many years a resident of
Wisconsin, by the citizens of Madison and vicinity, the Memorial Chapel, erected by us in A.D. 1878, is given to the custody
of the present commissioners of Forest Hill Cemetery and their successors, to be used for burial services by all persons who
desire interment of friends within the cemetery grounds"
The city council replied: "The good faith of the city is herby pledged to forever maintain said chapel in suitable condition and to faithfully
conform to the letter and spirit of the donation."
