Shot at the battle of Shiloh. For eight months a bullet and seven pieces of his clothing remained in the wound in his thigh.
The bullet was finally removed but had been embedded so long that bone had grown over and the injury was very slow to heal.
He returned to the field and active service with the wound not yet healed and it continued to reopen.
After the war, in the summer of 1866, he twisted and re-injured the wound while acting as pall-bearer at the funeral of a friend causing it to
open once again. The injury finally causing his death October 24, 1868, ten days after his marriage.
The obelisk reads "received a wound at Shiloh, Apr. 6, 1862. of which he died in Milwaukee, Wis. Oct. 24, 1868,"
